What Do Parents Want?
A report from EdChoice examines what American parents actually want from their children's schools. Based on a nationally representative survey of more than 1,500 parents, the study explores how families evaluate school quality, what they prioritize in the classroom and what trade-offs they're willing to make.
The findings reveal some strong preferences. Eighty-four percent of parents want teachers to keep their politics to themselves, while 56% would reject a school whose political positions conflicted with their own, even if it offered strong academics. Parents also favor stricter discipline and STEM education, and many are willing to travel farther for a better school.
The report underscores why educational choice matters. Families have different priorities, and academic performance is only one consideration. As states expand school choice programs, policymakers need to ensure parents have reliable information, practical transportation options and the freedom to find schools that reflect their children's needs.
