Surveying Educational Entrepreneurs: The Headwinds and Tailwinds to Building New Educational Enterprises

A report from EdChoice examines the challenges facing educational entrepreneurs who are creating new schools, learning models and classroom tools. Based on a survey of 59 entrepreneurs, the study explores what helps these ventures succeed and what stands in their way.

Funding emerged as a major challenge, with 69% of respondents relying on personal savings to support their ventures. Regulatory hurdles also posed obstacles, particularly for entrepreneurs establishing new schools. Interestingly, most respondents were far less concerned about competition than about securing the resources needed to grow.

The findings highlight an opportunity for policymakers to encourage educational innovation. By reducing unnecessary regulations and creating a more welcoming environment for new learning models, states can help entrepreneurs expand educational options and give families more choices.
